Papers, 1821-1938.

Collection contains the correspondence, 1860-1882, of John Hampden "Ham" Chamberlayne, newspaper editor and politician of Norfolk and Petersburg, Va., and correspondence, 1865-1894, and accounts, 1882-1892, of his wife, Mary Walker (Gibson) Chamberlayne of Norfolk, Petersburg, and Richmond. Included are letters from their courtship, as well as papers of their parents and other Chamberlayne and Gibson kin. Among them are business correspondence, 1866-1871, and accounts, 1847-1879, of Martha Burwell (Dabney) Chamberlayne during her widowhood; correspondence and accounts, 1856-1876, of Edward Pye Chamberlayne who was deaf; correspondence, 1836-1892, of Churchill Jones Gibson; correspondence, 1837- 1893, of Lucy Fitzhugh (Atkinson) Gibson, as well as her commonplace book, ca. 1835; correspondence, 1839-1896, diary, 1874, and commonplace book, ca. 1862-1891, of Ann Elizabeth Jones (Gibson) Bartlett Gibson; and correspondence, 1882-1938, of Churchill Gibson Chamberlayne and his wife, Elizabeth Breckinridge (Bolling) Chamberlayne. There are also three student notebooks and an unattributed commonplace book, as well as some letters among members of the Waller family written during the Civil War. Papers address family relationships in the last half of the nineteenth century and reveal economic and personal aspects of Reconstruction for family members.
